The Aftermath of the Nigerian Impressive $25 M Art Center and the Benin Bronzes
Nigeria's stunning new West African Art Museum (Mowaa) has found itself in the crosshairs of regional political struggles during the time it was scheduled to β but was unable β to welcome visitors to the public for the first time.
The Grand Vision
The six-hectare facility is located in the center of Benin's urban center, administrative center of the southern area of Edo β and includes an excavation site and structures created by high-profile British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the Smithsonian African American Museum that was inaugurated in Washington DC in 2016.
It has been five years in the creation β and is designed to celebrate both the history and the present of cultural innovation in the region famous for the cultural artifacts, historical pieces taken from the royal palace by UK forces in the 1800s.
Readiness and Potential
It is remarkable β and prior to the planned opening, Mowaa was active with staff resolved to prove it is a venue that can match well-known cultural centers in the Western world.
Inside art restorers carefully revealed artworks from protective packaging, examining each item and taking meticulous records before arranging them on walls and plinths.
Technicians fine-tuned temperature regulation systems. In the materials science laboratory, officers set up instruments meant to maintain centuries-old artefacts.
Investment and Economic Plans
The project has been the brainchild of entrepreneur Phillip Ihenacho β currently Mowaa's managing director.
"I aim us to have a major economic impact on area populations in this region," he told the press, noting that he aspired to make Benin City "a cultural destination."
Mowaa, a not-for-profit local organization, aims at establishing in excess of 30,000 work positions and contributing more than $80m per year to the regional creative economy through alliances and activities.
Funding Sources and Political Challenges
It has taken $25m to reach this point β funds collected from different contributors, including the international partners, the UK museum and the local administration.
But currently the local government has withdrawn support from beneath it β revoking the use of the land on which the building was erected.
An official representative explained this was because in the original paperwork it had identified as Edo Museum of West African Art β and it had later removed "the regional name" from its title.
Unrest and Official Response
This announcement followed protests on Sunday, when protesters invaded the campus insisting it be named the Museum of the Benin Kingdom.
A boisterous assembly insulted overseas dignitaries at the museum before the opening β compelling them to be hurried away under official guard.
President Bola Tinubu has also intervened to try and resolve the conflict, setting up a high-level committee to do some damage control.
Political Complexities
But why has this turned into so divisive β and such a PR disaster?
A great deal of it results from local power struggles at a regional government level, as it was Edo's previous governor Godwin Obaseki β whose administration ended the previous year β who was a key supporter of the initiative.
And it seems the administration of the current leader, a close ally of the local traditional ruler, known as the traditional leader, may seek greater involvement in the initiative. The demonstrators on Sunday, for case, were calling for that the museum be placed under the control of Oba Ewuare II.
The Historical Objects Discussion
This brings into focus the controversial matter of the historical artworks, one of the region's most renowned cultural treasures.
Because though the institution does ultimately open, these objects will be noticeably missing.
They are brass, elephant tusk and wooden carvings that once adorned the king's residence of the historical empire before British soldiers took them in 1897 during a punitive expedition.
Nowadays, numerous stay scattered across museums in Europe and North America -- featuring the London museum, European center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Return Initiatives
Their return has become one of the most disputed discussions in the international art community. About 150 have currently come back β and further are due to follow.
When ideas for the institution in the urban center were first announced in recent years, the movers and shakers on the national arts community expected it would become their perfect venue β a advanced facility to display them to the international community.
But the waters were muddied recently after the national authorities stated that the Oba would be the proper guardian of repatriated artifacts β and the palace campaigned for a facility under the royal family's direct control, opposing the wishes of Obaseki.
Strategic Positioning
This placed Mowaa in a delicate position: maintaining a clear stance on restitution while remaining diplomatic on ownership β and highlighting its broader vision, which led to|c
